Who is…
Nahshon
also known as: Naashon, Naasson, or Nachshon
Hebrew: נַחְשׁוֹן —transliteration: Naḥšon
He served as the prominent leader (nasi) of the Tribe of Judah during the Exodus and wilderness wandering period. The Tribe of Judah was positioned at the front of the Israelite camp on the east side (Numbers 2:3), leading the marching order when the nation traveled (Numbers 10:14). They were also the first to present offerings at the dedication of the Holy Tabernacle (Numbers 7:12-17).
Nahshon is a 5th generation descendant of the patriarch Judah (son of Jacob/Israel).
He is the son of Amminadab, is listed at the time of the first numbering of the tribes in the wilderness (Exodus 6:23). He is one of the 12 tribal leaders who assisted Moses in the census (Numbers 1:7).
His sister Elisheba was the wife of Aaron who became the first High Priest of Israel. She is the mother of the priestly line through Aaron’s sons.
Nahshon was born into Egyptian slavery, he experienced the miraculous plagues, God’s liberation, the Sinai revelations, various other miracles, and finally the wilderness wanderings. Sadly, he was among those of whom God said, “They shall surely die in the wilderness.”
He was not permitted to enter the Promised Land, and so he died in the wilderness ().
Jewish tradition portrays him as overall righteous, bold, and exemplary.
His son Salmon (also spelled Salma) established the town of Bethlehem in Judah.
His name occurs in the Greek form Naasson in the genealogy of Christ (Matthew 1:4; Luke 3:32).
