Meaning: an archer, teacher; fruitful
This is the name of a Canaanite who probably inhabited the district south of Shechem, between Mounts Ebal and Gerizim.
His name was given to a notable oak tree at the city of Shechem.
And Abram passed through the land as far as the site of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanite was then in the land. —Genesis 12:6
Here Abraham built his first altar in the promised land, and here the Lord appeared unto him. He afterwards left this area and moved southward, and pitched his tent between Bethel on the west and Hai on the east (Genesis 12:7-8).
