Ashteroth Karnaim
also known as: Ashteroth-Karnaim, Ashterothkarnaim, Ashtaroth Karnaim
Hebrew: עַשְׁתְּרֹת קַרְנַיִם —meaning: Karnaim means two horns or peaks, the crescent Moon has two points, “Ashteroth of the two horns”
This is the name of an ancient city that was near the city of Ashteroth. Both were east of the Jordan River in Bashan. Karnaim was northwest of Ashteroth, and as Asteroth declined, Karnaim became known as Ashteroth Karnaim.
Joshua simply calls it “Ashtaroth” Joshua 12:4.
Both cities were originally the abode of the Rephaim (Genesis 14:5).
Ashteroth (Ashtaroth) is the same as Astarte.
Karnaim is mentioned in the book of Amos (Amos 6:13), as King Jeroboam II captured it (Amos 6:2).
Eventually King Tiglath-Pileser destroyed Ashteroth (aka Ashtaroth) and Karnaim became Bashan’s capital.
Karnaim/Ashteroth Karnaim is considered to be the same as the Hellenistic era city of Karnein of mentioned in the apocryphal 2 Maccabees 12:21.
