“In his search to help others, he found out something about himself”

Here’s what the distributor says about their film: “Inspired by true events

When a drug bust goes wrong, Police Sergeant James Buanacore is forced to quit the job he loves. With his faith falling in doubt, he is encouraged to take on a job at a local Christian high school as a Criminal Justice teacher to troubled students and as coach to the struggling baseball team. Just when James is thinking of giving up, a student challenges him to begin the investigation that will change all their lives forever—an investigation into the existence of Jesus Christ.

When James' wife Stephanie has a miscarriage, he is devastated and begins to question his previously strong faith. Depressed and angry, James isolates himself until his famous brother encourages him to take a job as a criminal justice teacher and baseball coach at a Christian high school. With his cop mentality challenging his students, James struggles through experiences with an unsupportive principal, a guidance counselor with a secret, and rebellious students. But when his best option seems to be quitting, a student challenges him to begin the investigation that will change his life, and those of his students, forever… the investigation into the homicide of Jesus Christ.

GMF partnered with Gary Habermas, PhD and Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale to create a 6-week workbook on the Investigation of Jesus Christ. Launching from the Investigative Study in the film which probes us to investigate the matter for ourselves, the workbook allows individuals, classes, life groups, youth groups, pastors and teachers to use this educational tool to seek the truth. Entitled The Investigation Into the Homicide of Jesus Christ, this 1 hour course per week will allow you to delve further into the historical figure named Jesus Christ and come to your own conclusions about his life, death, and resurrection.”

Positive—“Would you die for a lie?” As you read in the distributor’s synopsis of the movie, a God fearing police officer has a couple of traumatic, faith-breaking (at least for him) events in his life that cause him to question the existence or reason for believing in God. He winds up teaching a class that begins like a scene from “To Sir With Love,” where he must gain the respect of some unruly students. He eventually does, and we get to the meat of the movie where they try to prove the Jesus story with circumstantial evidence.

The movie cuts back-and-forth between classroom debate and the action played out with his baseball team. I am a big baseball fan, but movies that try to make baseball exciting are not always successful. In this case, the classroom drama was the better attraction of the two.

To their credit, as they delved into the evidence of Jesus, they sought references apart from Scripture. **Slight spoiler alert: The highlight to me was when the police officer asked his students one by one if they would die for a lie. End spoiler**

What I won’t tell you is who he was referring to when he asked them that question. It is worth the rental just to see that. Though clearly a low-budget movie, the acting was passable, and the overall story was very good. It also gives you some thoughts to ponder the next time you try to witness to a nonbeliever. 1 Peter 3:15—But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.
My Ratings: Moral rating: Better than Average / Moviemaking quality: 3½

Positive—Sadly, the movie is not being released in theaters all over the world, but today I got a mail from “The Investigator” moviemaking saying they will be doing a DVD version internationally in 2014. That’s a great news.
