-
Uzziel, son of Kohath
He is one of the sons of Kohath (a Levite), and uncle of Aaron (Exodus 6:18; Leviticus 10:4). This places him in the Levitical line responsible for tabernacle/Ark duties.
The Uzzielites formed a Levitical subdivision (Numbers 3:27; 1 Chronicles 26:23).
He is an uncle of Aaron and Moses. He is a grandson of the patriarch Levi. Genealogy: Levi → Kohath → (Amram, Izhar, Hebron,) Uzziel (4th son).
Uzziel’s sons: Exodus 6:22 names Mishael, Elzaphan (Elizaphan), and Zithri.
-
Uzziel, son of Ishi
This Simeonite captain is mentioned in 1 Chronicles 4:39-43.
He lived during Judea’s post-Exile period. He appears in verse 42 as one of 4 leaders of a military expedition by members of the tribe of Simeon.
These leaders (identified as brothers or close kin, “the sons of Ishi”) commanded 500 Simeonites who traveled south to Mount Seir (the mountainous region southeast of the Dead Sea, associated with Edom). There they “defeated the remnant of the Amalekites who had escaped” and settled permanently in the area.
This event occurred “in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah” (1 Chronicles 4:41), placing it in the late 8th century BC during the reign of the reforming king Hezekiah (circa 715–686 BC; see 2 Kings 18–20 and 2 Chronicles 29–32).
Simeon’s tribal territory was geographically embedded within Judah’s inheritance (see Joshua 19:1–9). Simeon’s listing is shorter and notes their relatively smaller numbers compared to Judah (Joshua 19:27: “his brothers did not have many children, nor did all their clan multiply like the men of Judah”).
During Hezekiah’s godly reforms and the relative stability of the southern kingdom (before the Assyrian threat fully materialized), Simeonites—loyal to Judah—sought and received additional land. The Chronicler frames this as God’s blessing on those who remained faithful amid the earlier division of the kingdom (when many in the north were carried into Assyrian exile).
Uzziel himself is a minor but named figure: one of 4 captains whose leadership enabled the Simeonites’ success in getting pasture for their flocks in peace.
