Who is…
Herod Philip II
This is the son of Herod the Great and Cleopatra of Jerusalem (not the same as Cleopatra of Egypt).
He was “tetrarch” of Batanea, Iturea, Trachonitis, and Auranitis. He rebuilt the city of Caesarea Philippi, calling it by his own name to distinguish it from the Caesarea on the seacoast which was the seat of the Roman government in Judea.
Now in the 15th year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene —Luke 3:1
Herod Philip II married Princess Salome, the daughter of vengeful Herodias who schemed the execution of godly John the Baptist, the harbinger of Jesus the Christ. Salome did the required dancing and requested his head on a platter.
